Recently, we headed to our friends’ house in the beautiful Three Arch Bay community of Laguna Beach. The occasion? A casual beach party where homemade pizza was the star of the show. And trust me, these weren’t your typical delivery pies. We unleashed our creativity with gourmet toppings and smoky, wood-fired flavor that took our pizza game to the next level.

Big Green Egg + Pizza: A Match Made in Culinary Heaven

Here’s why your Big Green Egg is the ultimate pizza machine:

  • Intense Heat for Perfect Crust: The Big Green Egg’s intense heat allows you to achieve that coveted crispiness on the outside and a soft, chewy interior.
  • Smoky Char: With a touch of wood smoke, the pizza develops a subtle, charred flavor that adds another layer of complexity.
  • Versatility: The Big Green Egg allows you to cook directly on a pizza stone for classic pies or try different methods like cast iron skillets for deep-dish pizza.

Topping Inspiration for a Crowd-Pleasing Pizza Extravaganza

The possibilities for pizza toppings are endless. Here are a few ideas that were hits at our Three Arch Bay party:

  • The Classic Margherita: A timeless combination of a bright tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil leaves.
  • Spicy Sausage & Pepperoni: A crowd-pleaser perfect for those who love a kick of spice.
  • BBQ Chicken & Caramelized Onions: A twist on the classic BBQ chicken pizza with a hint of sweetness.
  • Vegetarian Supreme: A colorful array of roasted vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes.

Tips for Big Green Egg Pizza Success

  • Simple Starters: Use a no-knead dough and top it with an easy and authentic Italian tomato sauce.
  • Preheated Pizza Stone: Heat your pizza stone inside the Big Green Egg with the dome closed for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Proper Temperature: Aim for a temperature between 500°F and 600°F for the perfect crispy crust.
  • Don’t Overload the Pizza: Too many toppings can prevent the dough from cooking evenly.
  • Use a Pizza Peel: A dusted pizza peel makes it easy to slide the pizza in and out of the Big Green Egg.

The Big Green Egg is a unique smoker/grill that can reach temperatures over 600 F. It’s the perfect temperature for making homemade pizzas. If you do not have a Big Green Egg, you can make pizzas the same way by placing the pizza stone in a very hot 500 F oven or grill. At home, I use my Green Mountain Grills Pizza Oven.
