Grilled Cheese, Tomato & Egg Sandwich

Today, we’re taking your campfire cuisine to gourmet heights with a recipe that’s bursting with flavor, texture, and pure, melty goodness: the Grilled Cheese, Heirloom Tomato & Egg Sandwich. Forget the confines of your kitchen – we’re making this masterpiece on my trusty Camp Chef flat top grill, surrounded by the crackling fire and fresh air of the great outdoors.

Let’s face it, sometimes a classic grilled cheese just hits the spot. But why stop there? This recipe elevates the humble sandwich to new levels with the addition of juicy heirloom tomatoes and perfectly cooked eggs, creating a symphony of flavors and textures that will leave you wanting more.

And to truly embrace the campfire spirit, we’re using thick-cut San Luis sourdough bread, its tangy sourdough flavor perfectly complementing the richness of the cheese and the freshness of the summer tomatoes. Plus, who can resist a touch of heat? We’ll be adding a generous drizzle of our favorite hot sauce for a fiery kick that will wake up your taste buds.

So, gather your ingredients, crank up the campfire, and let’s embark on a culinary adventure that will make you rethink what’s possible on a flat top grill!

Fresh Flavors, Timeless Appeal: The Ingredients and Ratios

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • San Luis Sourdough Bread: Thick-cut slices are key for that satisfyingly sturdy and slightly tangy base.
  • Heirloom Tomatoes: Ripe, juicy, and bursting with flavor – choose your favorite variety for a pop of color and sweetness.
  • Eggs: We’re going for fluffy, perfectly cooked eggs, so quality matters.
  • Bacon: Who can resist bacon? It makes everything better!
  • American Cheese: Slices of your favorite brand, thinly sliced – cheddar or Swiss work well too!
  • Butter: Unsalted butter adds richness and helps create that golden-brown crust.
  • Hot Sauce: Your choice! A few drops or a generous drizzle – adjust to your heat preference.
  • Salt and Pepper: To taste, these pantry staples enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients.

Mastering the Flat Top: Crafting Your Campfire Culinary Masterpiece

Now, let’s get cooking! With the Camp Chef flat top sizzling hot, it’s time to create some magic:

  1. Prep is key: Wash and slice the tomatoes. Crack the eggs into a small bowl.Season them with salt and pepper.
  2. Butter Up: Spread some butter on one side of each bread slice. Place them butter-side down on the hot grill.
  3. Egg-cellent Start: While the bread toasts, pour the eggs onto the hot grill, forming two circles. Cook until the whites are set and the yolks are cooked to your liking (sunny-side up, over easy, or scrambled – you choose!).
  4. Cheese Time: Lay a slice of cheese on each toasted bread slice.
  5. Tomato Tango: Once the eggs are ready, transfer them carefully onto the cheese-laden bread slices.
  6. Heirloom Heaven: Top each sandwich with juicy tomato slices.
  7. Seal the Deal: Carefully flip the other toasted bread slices on top to create the sandwich. Press down gently to ensure good contact.
  8. Hot Sauce Fiesta: Drizzle your chosen hot sauce over the top of each sandwich, adjusting the amount to your heat preference.
  9. Campfire Crunch: Cook the sandwiches for another 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and melty perfection is achieved.

Beyond the Basics: Explore Your Campfire Culinary Creativity

This recipe is just the starting point for your flat top adventures! Here are some ideas to personalize your experience:

  • Vegetarian Delight: Use Morningstar veggie sausages instead of meat. Swap the cheese for avocado slices.
  • Protein Power: Add grilled chicken, sliced deli turkey, or even smoked salmon for a heartier option.
  • Spice it Up: Saute diced onions, peppers, or jalapenos on the grill before adding them to your sandwich.
