Italian Pink Sauce

This delicious pink marinara sauce, also known as an Italian pink sauce, was inspired by a sauce served at Newport Beach restaurant Mama D’s. This Italian pink sauce recipe is delicious with spaghetti, ravioli, and eggplant parmesan. Hope you enjoy it!

Italian Pink Sauce


  • 1 jar roma or plum tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon dried or fresh basil
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic-shallot puree or 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and sugar for seasoning


  1. Preheat pan on medium high heat.
  2. After 1 minute, add 2 tablespoons olive oil and saute carrot and onion until soft and translucent. Add the garlic puree and cook another couple minutes. After 5 minutes, add dried basil and tomatoes.
  3. After it starts to boil, sprinkle in crushed red pepper and put the lid on. Simmer 30 minutes.
  4. Remove lid and let reduce a bit more.
  5. Transfer to food processor or blender and pulse for 30 seconds. To finish, season with a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of sugar if it's too acidic.
  6. To make the pink sauce, add about 1/4 cup heavy cream and mix again.

    I tried making thism twice actually, and used Wild Harvest brand, organic, canned, crushed tomatoes with basil from Albertson’s (local supermarket), and a little bit of stir-in garlic paste instead of the shallot/garlic puree because I couldnt find it. I followed your instructions to a “T”. It turned out tangy and barely edible. I tried adding a little bit of sugar and added some sea salt. I’m assuming the tanginess is related to the quality of the tomatoes ? ? The pink sauce at Mama D’s is buttery and creamy, and according to the employees at Mama D’s, it’s a combo of Alfredo and marinara sauce. Any tips on how to avoid the tanginess? Also, I am serious rookie, so I’m sure I am missing something. Thanks for your time!

      The san marzano tomatoes really make it I think. I got mine at walmart, believe it or not. I was surprised they had them! Anyway, they have a very mild flavor. I made it last night and it has a very complex and buttery flavor. That said, I don’t think it’s impossible to make those tomatoes work, I just wouldn’t know how to do it. I’m a serious rookie too.
