Navajo Fry Bread Tacos

These authentic Navajo Fry Bread Tacos are a delicious treat when visiting Navajo Nation. They’re made with a light and fluffy crunchy tortilla that can have as many fillings and toppings as your imagination allows!

We first tried these delicious Navajo tacos during a stop at the Ute Mountain Reservation at Four Corners, U.S.A. This popular tourist attraction marks the intersection of four states: Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

Traditionally, the fry bread is offered with toppings such as powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, honey, apple butter or apricot lam.

The Navajo Frybread Tacos are served open-faced with your choice of toppings like chili beans, ground beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions.

The Navajo fry bread tacos are prepared fresh to order and fried in hot oil until thick, bubbly and crunchy. Then, you just add your favorite toppings, fold in half, and enjoy!

When making this Navajo fry bread tacos recipe at home, prepare all of your filling ingredients, such as ground beef, in advance. You can also try your hand at a Navajo Burger, which uses the same fry bread recipe. Then all you do is add the grilled beef patties and your favorite burger toppings!

Ingredients
  

Navajo Fry Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 cups oil for frying

Fry Bread Toppings

  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon Sugar
  • Honey
  • Apple Butter
  • Apricot Jam

Navajo Taco Toppings

  • Chili beans warmed
  • Ground beef cooked and warmed
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Diced onions

Navajo Burger Toppings

  • 1 grilled beef patties
  • shredded lettuce
  • sliced tomatoes
  • sliced onions
  • shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions
 

  • To prepare the Navajo Fry Bread, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add the water, whisking well, to form the dough.
  • Knead on a floured surface until incorporated. Form into a ball, place in a mixing bowl, and cover with plastic wrap. Let rest about 10-15 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 1 1/2-inch sized balls and roll into 6-7 inch thin rounds.
  • Fry each tortilla in preheated 350-degree oil about 20-30 seconds on each side, or until golden brown and puffy. Remove with tongs. Drain on paper towels to absorb some of the oil and top with your favorite sweet or savory ingredients.
