How to Make Homemade Tortilla Chips

Ingredients:

Equipment:

Step 1: Slice and Prep the Tortillas

Start by gathering your three key ingredients. You’ll need 12 white corn tortillas, which provide the base for the chips. Canola oil acts as the frying medium, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice along with a sprinkle of sea salt add an extra layer of flavor.

Now, grab a sharp knife or pizza cutter and slice each tortilla into wedges. You can choose the size and shape you prefer, but triangles or wedges are classic options.

Step 2: Heat Up the Oil

Fill your large pot or deep fryer with enough canola oil to reach a depth of about 1-2 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure the oil reaches the correct temperature, as this is crucial for achieving crispy chips without burning.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have a deep fryer, a large pot works just fine. Just make sure it’s heavy-bottomed to maintain consistent heat.

Step 3: Fry the Tortilla Wedges

Once the oil is hot, carefully add a small batch of tortilla wedges to the pot or fryer using tongs. Avoid overcrowding the pot, as this can lower the oil temperature and lead to soggy chips.

Fry the tortilla wedges for 1-2 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Keep a close eye on them, as they can burn quickly.

Step 4: Drain and Season

Once golden brown, use the tongs to transfer the chips to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Season immediately with a sprinkle of sea salt and a squeeze of fresh lime juice, to taste.

Step 5: Repeat and Enjoy!

Continue frying the tortilla wedges in small batches until all the wedges are cooked. Season each batch with salt and lime juice as desired.
