Campari Spritz

Have you ever tried a Campari Spritz? Invented at the historic Camparino bar in Milan, this is a refreshing drink that is enjoyed throughout Italy. I recently had a chance to visit the restaurant, and it didn’t disappoint.

Located in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, just across from the stunning Duomo cathedral, Camparino serves up a variety of signature cocktails and small bites. For all’aperitivo, try their formation e noci (cheese and walnuts) or the buffalo stracciatella cream with marinated sardines and candied lemon.

Main courses at Camparino include such dishes as Osso Buco, Grilled Octopus and Fish of the Day with Vegetables and Sprouts. For less adventurous diners, they even have a signature hamburger and club sandwich. Each dish on the menu includes a suggested Campari cocktail to pair with your meal.

Some people often wonder the difference of Campari vs. Aperol, which is a very similar liquor seen throughout Italy. I would say that Campari definitely has a more strong flavor, while Aperol is a bit more orangey and fruitier. That said, you could certainly use Aperol as a Campari substitute.

In addition to the Campari Spritz, other fun cocktails to make with Campari include the Campari Tonic (made with Campari and Thomas Henry tonic water) and the Negroni, made with 1 oz. Campari, 1 oz. Bulldog Gin and 1 oz. 1757 Vermouth di Torino Rosso (or your favorite Sweet Vermouth).
