Best Souvlaki in Athens

For the best souvlaki in Athens, don’t miss a stop at Oi Gynakes (Οι Γυναίκες) in Koukaki. Located on the pedestrian strip of Drakou, this hole-in-the-wall souvlaki restaurant is a favorite of locals, who come here for their fresh-grilled skewers, burgers and gyros. Our shuttle driver tipped us off to this place, and he said it’s his favorite place to eat when he’s in the city.

The restaurant goes by the name “The Women,” and we actually walked past it a couple times before asking a nearby shop owner where it was. Even though Google Maps said we were at our destination, the sign out front says “ΨΗΤΟΠΩΛΕΙΟ” — not Οι Γυναίκες. Some locals also call it “The Girls” (Τα Κορίτσια).

In business for more than 45 years, the little restaurant is definitely showing its age. But people don’t come here for the decor; they come for the food. There’s not much seating inside, where you basically order from the counter, but outside there is a nice assortment of tables and chairs to enjoy your meal while doing a little people watching.

I decided to try the chicken souvlaki, which was cooked on the spot and wrapped in a warm pita with tomatoes, onions and garlic yogurt. The sauce was incredible, with a hint of spices that complemented the grilled chicken perfectly!

If you go, keep in mind that the entire menu is in Greek, so it was slightly intimidating placing our order. They also serve a delicious pork souvlaki, gyros and meat platters. Be sure to ask for extra tzatziki sauce, which is extraordinarily good!
